As part of our pre-Feast Portland foodie adventure, we toured the highlights of Southern Oregon from the arid agricultural fields and scenic vineyards through the mountains to the coast. Discovering the southern Oregon coast was an eye-opener for this traveler who frequented coastal towns to the north. The Southern Oregon Coast is a bit wilder and less populated and therein lies one of the reasons you’ll put this area on your must-visit list.

Located in the South Coast region of Oregon, Coos Bay, according to Visit Oregon Coast’s website, is the largest deep-draft port between San Fransisco, California, and Puget Sound, Washington. It is the ancestral home of several native tribes, whose language the name “Coos” (which translates to “lake” or “place of pines”) comes from.

In the mood for killer handcrafted cocktails? What about creamy biscuits and gravy packed with flavor? Maybe smoked salmon benedict and stellar river views are your thing. Found on the Coquille River in Bandon, not far from Bullards Beach State Park is The Loft Restaurant and Bar. The Loft is a local favorite and a must-stop spot when you’re on the southern Oregon coast.

When you leave the crowds and head into the heart of the Southern Oregon Coast, you see things that don’t exist anywhere else along the Beaver State’s 363-mile shoreline. Sea stacks seem to rise a little higher, waves crash a bit harder, and myriad inland waterways enchant with quiet salt marshes, expansive mudflats and torrid river canyons.

In Bandon, we experience plentiful food, breathtaking scenery, and interesting people.
