South Slough Reserve
South Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve is a protected estuary and natural area located in the Coos Bay Estuary on Oregon’s Southern Coast. Open to the public most days of the year, South Slough Reserve is a destination for recreation, discovery, and learning.
Hiking paths and boardwalks wind through forests and wetlands, offering visitors views of salt marshes, mudflats, and woodlands – as well as an assortment of native plants and animals. Trails with accessible features are available. You can also experience the rich cultural and natural history of the area by paddling the waterways that flow throughout the Reserve. Visitors may bring their own kayaks or canoes or rent them during a paddle trip class.
At the South Slough Reserve Visitor Center, adults and children can learn about local habitat and wildlife, the history of South Slough Reserve, and some of the active research taking place.
Interpretive programs and other community classes offer unique opportunities to engage with the surrounding area. Visitors can sign up in advance to participate in a rotating list of classes offered, including guided hikes, kayak paddle trips, birding excursions, and building bat houses. K-12 science camps and programs are also available for children and teens, primarily in the summer.
Restrooms with accessible features are located onsite. Dogs are allowed at the Reserve and must be kept on a leash. South Slough Reserve is managed in partnership by the Oregon Department of State Lands and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Learn more and plan your visit.
