Juneteenth Freedom Day: Rooted in Resilience

Presented by Soulfood Sunday and organized in collaboration with community partners including Black Market Gourmet, Southwestern Oregon Community College, Coos History Museum, and the Oregon Remembrance Project, this year's theme-"Rooted in Resilience"- invites us all to reflect on our shared history, celebrate Black culture, and move forward in solidarity.

Thursday, June 12 | 5:30 – 7 p.m.

Film Screening: Juneteenth: Faith & Freedom

Coos History Museum | 1210 N Front St, Coos Bay, OR

A moving documentary following a Black man's journey through Texas as he grapples with the legacy of slavery and the misuse of Christianity to justify it. Through the lens of Juneteenth, the film reveals a legacy of hope, resistance, and faith.

Juneteenth Flag Raising Ceremony

Southwestern Oregon Community College | 1988 Newmark Ave, Coos Bay, OR

This ceremonial gathering honors the history and future of Black liberation with the raising of the Juneteenth flag in a spirit of reflection, unity, and joy.

Juneteenth: Americanism Reclaimed – A Talk with Taylor Stewart

Southwestern Oregon Community College | 1988 Newmark Ave, Coos Bay, OR | Umpqua Hall Room 184

Join Taylor Stewart, Executive Director of the Oregon Remembrance Project, for a powerful reflection on Juneteenth's place in American history and the ongoing movement for truth, reconciliation, and justice.

Community BBQ and Juneteenth Conversation

Azalea Park | 640 Old County Rd, Brookings, OR

This regional gathering in Curry County will bring community members together for food, storytelling, and dialogue. As we honor the past, we also reflect on the present-day meaning of Juneteenth and the continued work of liberation.

Sunday, June 22 | 3 – 6 p.m.

Soulfood Sunday Parking Lot Party

Black Market Gourmet | 495 Central Ave, Coos Bay, OR

Close out the week with a celebration steeped in tradition: soul food, gospel hymns, poetry, local history, live music, and a vibrant Melanated Market. This joyful event uplifts Black culture, creativity, and community.

All events are free and open to the public. Everyone is welcome.
