Find Scattered Treasure to Appease the Kraken

According to Port Goreford legend, the town’s waters are home to the Kraken, a mythical sea monster that sank a greedy fishing schooner known for piracy in the 1800s. For more than a century, the ship’s stolen treasures lay buried on the ocean floor — until now, as the treasure has washed ashore. The legend says that if the Kraken wakes on Halloween night to find a single coin missing from its treasure, it will rise in fury, wreaking havoc in its path as it searches for what’s stolen.

During the week of Halloween, Oct. 24-31, 2026, visitors can join in the action by collecting special Kraken coins at participating businesses for a chance to win over $3,000 in prizes, including overnight stays. Follow a treasure map and, to find bonus coins, solve riddles posted to the Discover Port Orford Facebook page. Return the coins to the Kraken’s Chest at the Visitor Center at Battle Rock Wayside park, open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, for a chance to win prizes — and, of course, to keep Port Orford safe from monsters. There’s no purchase necessary, and if you return three coins, you’ll get a guaranteed prize, with winners announced on Halloween night.
